James Hadley was born in Massachusetts in 1916. He had completed one year of college and was married, working as a bookkeeper, before enlisting in the Army in Springfield, Massachusetts in November 1942. During his training period, Hadley didn't stay in one place for very long. He began training for mountain combat and winter warfare at Camp Hale, Colo., before being re-assigned to Fort Ord, Calif.
